Sunnyvale, CA Aug. 4, 2015 – The California Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is partnering with Silicon Valley technology company PayNearMe to accept cash child-support payments at nearly 8,000. 7-Eleven stores nationwide, many of which are open 24 hours a day. The in-store transaction requires no paperwork and can be done in approximately 60 seconds.  The first state child-support agency to use PayNearMe was Nebraska Child Support Payment Center.

DCSS began offering PayNearMe in Fresno County in June. The county saw payments as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 8 p.m., including payments made in four states outside of California. Based on Fresno’s success, DCSS has now made PayNearMe available to all 51 county child support agencies in the state of California.

“PayNearMe benefits a variety of parents, from those who work late shifts, to those who don’t have bank accounts; those who receive their tips or paychecks in cash and others who simply prefer to pay that way,” said PayNearMe’s general manager Christian Solomine. “August is Child Support Awareness Month. This month is about encouraging parents to be there for their kids – and this is one more way they can do that easily.”

Parents can use PayNearMe to make a California child support payment in three easy steps.

  1. Visit childsup.ca.gov/paymentoptions and select PayNearMe as the payment option.
  2. Fill in their personal Participant Identification Number (PAR ID) and select whether they would like their payment ID code sent to their phone or email.
  3. Choose from the list of 7-Eleven locations closest to them, visit the store and hand both payment ID code and cash to the cashier.

After the transaction is completed, the non-custodial parent receives a receipt as proof of payment. Payments can take up to three days to post, and there is a $1.99 convenience fee.

PayNearMe has been working in the child support space since 2014, when the company began processing child support payments for Nebraska Child Support Payment Center. In the past year, the number of payments processed per month has quadrupled, while the dollar volume of payments processed per month has multiplied six times. The Nebraska Child Support Payment Center receives 20 percent of its payments from 30 states outside of Nebraska.

For child-support agencies, implementation of PayNearMe for cash payments can be done quickly, with minimal changes to their systems.
